Measured Drawings
and Documentation

Project 1: On-Site Observation Journal

The project requires us to observe the site, Sungai Buloh Leprosarium "Valley of Hope" (双溪毛糯麻风病院 “希望之谷“)and produce sketches on-site that represents the architectural setting of the site.

The people, the buildings, the environment, and the history that ties every element together.

In my attempt of this project, I tried to portray a bit of a melancholy through the sketches, because that is how the site feels like to me. Stories are slowly getting forgotten, only the house remembers the instances of the life the occupants had in them. I'm afraid that slowly, the houses will be forgotten as well.

This project made me realise that simple but careful observations can bring a deep understanding of the site. Through sketching, each detail outlined by a stroke and shade can tell stories and sentiments. This project helped me understand the importance of on-site observation through sketches.

Project 2: Historical Research Report

The project 2 requires us to carry out an investigation on the historical background of the leprosarium. Upon understanding the historical foundations of the site, we are then required to analyse and understand the design of the chalets of the leprosarium, and how the spaces created influences the living experience of the settlers.

From this project, I gained a deeper understanding of the chalets and most importantly, the historical background of the site. From the leprosy disease, to leprosarium, to the Valley of Hope, each chapter of this history plays a pivotal role in the chalets design. Everything that had come before the chalets has led up to its design. Every bit of its history lies within the intricacy of the weatherboard walls, the louvres, the roof, the windows and doors, and most importantly the spaces they create.

Project 3: Measured Drawing

The project 2 requires us to produce scaled orthographic drawings to document the chalet. Producing these drawings requires an understanding of structure, construction, and application of drawing conventions.

The drawings enabled me to understand the design of the chalets, the details and the construction of each building component. The drawings can be seen as a fruition of the historical research, a product of the historical background and a response to the situation of the context then.
